From what i�ve heard online, from purposely nerfed bows in dark souls to urge the player to cast more spells or fight in melee. High enough that a composite bow actually will be stronger than a black bow of pharis.

A small offhand weapon like a dagger might be useful. A greatbow is situational useful because of its knockdown. This was tested on a human player. There are 67 melee and 9 ranged weapons in the game + 5 weapons for spell casting. But now we have the speed of the bows.
